Moscow - Day 2

We waited around for a long time for the hostel manager to get in so we could arrange to have our visas registered. Having got that done, we set off for the Tretyakov Gallery. It looked easy to find by our map and after looking at the metro map and seeing that we'd have to change trains at least twice, we decided to walk.

We were not lost. We took a walking tour south of the Kremlin. A couple hours later, we found the gallery and both got in for student price. (Hey, I've got to take advantage of it while I can. It ain't gonna last forever.) The paintings were beautiful, the icons were impressive, I got to see more of my two favorite artists from the Hermitage. We also toured the church next door to the gallery. There was lots of shiny gold and some incense and a woman giving a tour in Italian.

Since we were close, we decided to check out Gorky Park. We took the metro this time. Big Boy thought it was kind of cool, but to me it was just a run down amusement park. We walked all over, from one end to another, and then left. There was one thing, though, that made me sad. They had a tiger who was passed out under an umbrella and a baby tiger on a leash who was meowing wanting to do something. Poor tigers.

Our theme for the week of American food chains continued with a visit to TGI Fridays. Onion rings, french fries, pasta with actual vegetables, and a Siberian Corona for me and a chocolate milkshake for Big Boy.

Then back to the hostel, but first, a walk up New Arbat street. Casinos, skateboarding kids (who skateboard with the same style as their parents drive), and people handing out advertising. We won't take that walk again. We got some cherries from a farmers' market on Old Arbat, 120 руб for a kilo. Hmm... what does that work out to? $4.90 for 2.2 lbs, so well. Not bad, and they were tasty.

Tomorrow, the Kremlin.
